Accessibility Statement
Built to be SEEN by everyone.
Our commitment
SEEN is built with, by, and for persons with disabilities. A website about access has to be accessible itself. If something on this site gets in your way, that’s on us to fix, and we want to hear about it.
Our standard
We designed this website to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA, the internationally recognized standard for accessible websites.
We test with keyboards, screen readers, zoom, and phones as we build. This website has not yet had an independent accessibility audit. We plan to arrange one and will share what we learn here.
What we’ve built in
- Night and day modes. Switch with the button at the top of every page. Your choice is remembered.
- Readable colours. Text meets AA contrast in both modes. Neon colours are used for headings and decoration, never for body text.
- No flashing. Neon glows fade in gently. Nothing flickers or flashes.
- Respects reduced motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, animations turn off.
- Keyboard friendly. Everything works with a keyboard, with a clear focus outline and a “Skip to main content” link.
- Screen reader support. Images have text descriptions, and decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
- Clear forms. Every field has a label, errors say what went wrong and how to fix it, and there are no time limits.
- Plain language. We write short sentences and avoid jargon.
- No autoplay. Nothing plays sound or video on its own. The SEEN | Firstlight countdown updates once a minute, not every second.
- Zoom and mobile. Pages work when text is enlarged to 200% and on phones.
- Other ways to reach us. You can always register for SEEN | Firstlight, ask a question, or apply to be featured by phone or email instead of a form.
Known limitations
We’re honest about what isn’t perfect yet:
- Logos are images. Our program logos are pictures of text. Each has a text description.
- Display font. Our headline font is wide and stylized. We use it only for short headings, with an easy-to-read font for everything else.
- Place names. Our land acknowledgement uses the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh names of the Nations. Some screen readers may not pronounce these characters correctly.
- Other platforms. Our emails (sent through Mailchimp) and our social media accounts follow those platforms’ own accessibility features, which we don’t fully control.
- Future videos. When SEEN8 Conversations videos are published, they’ll include captions and transcripts. confirm commitment
